Professional and Personal Experience

After spending the years from 1974 until 2009 in the private practice of law, and the years from 2009 till August 2023 as a Judge of the Superior Court in New Jersey, I am now delighted to take the next step in my legal career as Of Counsel to the law firm of Helmer, Conley & Kasselman, PA, where I will join many longtime friends again in the practice of law. I look forward to focusing on the areas of Family Law including but not limited to mediation/arbitration of economic and custody and parent time and possibly spending some time in the areas of real estate, municipal law, and land use law, all of which I had done in the years before becoming a judge.

Since joining the firm, I have engaged in extensive ICLE Family Law Mediation training which now allows me to be designated as a Mediator, Qualified 1:40 Administrative Office of the Courts and New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators, General Member. I have also taken similar training as a Parenting Coordinator which will place me on a similar AOC list for that process. In addition, I have completed the ICLE initial training for Arbitration. On another note, I will be returning to the Burlington County Bar Association as a Trustee for a three-year term beginning in June 2024.

I was born in South Philadelphia and became a Jersey Boy in 1956. I have remained a Jersey Boy ever since, except for a detour to LaSalle College. I even graduated from law school in New Jersey (Rutgers-Camden 1974). My philosophy of law, whether as a practicing attorney or a judge, is to conduct the practice holistically and focus on all the issues that are relevant to the client’s legal problems.

Giving something back has always been important to me. During my professional career to date, I have been actively involved in Bar Association activities, including as President of the Burlington County Bar Association from 1989-1990, as a Burlington County Trustee to the New Jersey State Bar Association from 1994-2000, member of State Bar Family Law Executive Committee, and assisting in the implementation of various court-related programs that continue to this day, including the establishment of the Matrimonial Early Settlement Program in Burlington County. Some of my civic activities include serving on the Medford Board of Education for 15 years, on the Mount Laurel Ballet Company Board of Directors, and as a coach for various local athletic organizations among many others. I have been fortunate to have received various awards and recognitions for both my professional and personal contributions. Faith is an important part of my life, and I was ordained as a Deacon of the Roman Catholic Church in May 2007.

The joy of my life is my family, including my wonderful and accomplished wife, our two children, and four grandchildren. What could be better?

I look forward to meeting and serving many of you in the days to come as I begin my next chapter at the Willingboro office of HCK.
