In one of the most high-profile and talked about child support cases that New Jersey family lawyers have come across in the past year, Hollywood star Mel Gibson has reached a child support settlement with the mother of his child.
For Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of their 2-year-old daughter, the agreement has come after months of hostility, played out in the public view. Under the terms of the agreement, both Gibson and Grigorieva will share joint physical and legal custody of their child. Until the child reaches 18 years of age, both Grigorieva and the child will live in the actor’s California home. When the child reaches 18 years of age, the home will be sold and the proceeds will be placed in a trust for the girl's future.
As part of the settlement, the actor also agreed to pay $750,000 in child support expenses. The money will be paid out in three installments of $250,000 over the next three years.
The settlement also includes a stipulation that both Gibson and Grigorieva refrain from releasing public statements about each other to the press. New Jersey family lawyers find this to be one of the more sensible aspects of the agreement. Since the child’s birth, Gibson and Grigorieva have engaged in a very public child support dispute. It's good to see that the two have decided to keep family matters private from now on and refrain from causing their child any pain.
