Three houses in New York were raided over the past few months after law enforcement officers traced thousands of pages of downloaded child porn to their homes.  After the raids, the law enforcement officers found that it was not the homeowner who had downloaded the porn, but persons who had gained unauthorized access to the homeowners’ unsecured Wi-Fi networks.  New Jersey criminal defense attorney believes this should be a warning to New Jersey residents about the importance of securing their Wi-Fi networks.

Experts have long advocated securing of Wi-Fi networks to prevent unauthorized and illegal access to your network.  However, many people continue to leave Wi-Fi routers open.

A number of recent cases, involving FBI raids on homes to which they traced downloaded child porn, should alert you to the need for securing your Wi-Fi network.  It was only later that law enforcement officers realized that it was neighbors and other persons who had accessed the WiFi routers and downloaded the child porn.  In some of these cases, the persons who actually downloaded the porn were finally arrested and charged.

According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, approximately 32% of Internet users have, at some point in time, tried to access a Wi-Fi network that was not theirs.  This should provide a warning to those who continue to leave their networks unsecured and open to outside access.  An unsecured Wi-Fi network makes it far too easy for someone to access your network and perform illegal activities like downloading child porn, leaving you to handle the consequences.
