New Jersey Shoplifting Consequences: How to Lessen Your Charges

My name is Brian Jacobs. I'm an attorney with Helmer, Conley & Kasselman. I represent clients in municipal court who have been charged with a motor vehicle offense, local ordinance or a criminal offense.

Oftentimes, these criminal offenses are shoplifting offenses. These offenses can be serious and they can lead to possible jail if the court finds that the person or the client is guilty.

We try to avoid a sentence of jail. We review the case. We review the case for a number of reasons, but one of the critical factors in a shoplifting case is identification of the defendant or our client.

Sometimes we are successful in having those charges dismissed, but if the charges and the evidence that support the charges are such that the state may have a stronger case, sometimes we're able to either have the client enter into a probationary program and avoid being convicted of shoplifting.

As I've mentioned already, shoplifting is a serious offense, can lead to jail. If you've been arrested for shoplifting, feel free to contact us at Helmer, Conley & Kasselman because we can help.
